City of Barcelona, Catalonia

The transformation of this area in the east of Barcelona is being carried out via a highly diverse set of actions, which together constitute a complete renovation of this currently abandoned area, providing it with a high degree of complexity of use, quality and urban importance:

  • Recuperation of the seafront around the area of the river Besòs, thereby creating an unbroken coastal development running from Barceloneta to Montgat. This new seafront is being built on land reclaimed from the sea and it is formed around a marina, seafront parks, new beaches and swimming areas, and a marine park that looks out on the sea and which includes the creation of coastal lagoons so as to attract an abundance of migratory birds.

  • Opening up the east of the city to the recuperated seafront from above the highway of Ronda Litoral; this is to be done via the construction of a large square, which will be a continuation of the road of La Diagonal and which will lead to the seafront parks.

  • Complete renovation and appropriate integration of the technical installations of the metropolitan area that are found in this zone (purification plant, waste treatment plant, power production plant).

  • Formation of a new central zone within the city at the starting point of La Diagonal, with offices, commerce and central facilities for the city (Forum Building, Convention Centre, old-peoples’ home).

  • Establishment of a continuous urban development on both banks of the river Besòs, with the creation of residential zones around the roads running parallel to the coast and to the Catalana.

  • Development of a large university area that is closely related to the 22@ district.

  • Renovation and recuperation of the urban dignity of the neighbourhood of La Mina by means of opening the area up to its surroundings, creating a new central boulevard with new housing and areas of activity, and restoring the existing buildings.

  • Recuperation of the banks of the river Besòs, which will be turned into a vast park for use by residents; the high-voltage electricity lines that cross the river will be removed.

  • Recuperation of the seabed along the Barcelona seafront; this is to be achieved through the construction of a series of underwater reefs that will encourage the recuperation of marine fauna.

The project introduces energy efficiency criteria and the utilisation of renewable energy sources through central heating and cooling systems and a 1.2 MW solar-energy plant.
